100th Post-100th Celebration

Are there events, movies, songs in your past that create a sense of achiness? Not a bad achy, but a deep remembrance and longing of a childhood past. A time when pretend became reality while hunting for that buried treasure. A time when Barbie looked so glamorous while on her date with Ken. A time when I wanted to pack up my belongings in my little red suitcase and go live with Anne Shirley on Prince Edward Island. Yes, that Anne, who spelled her name with an e.

If there is one story that stirs up deep emotions in my soul, it is that timeless tale, Anne of Green Gables. As a child, I fantasized about frolicking up and down the coastline in my Victorian dress with puffed sleeves. I could feel the wind brush my face and tousle my long hair ribbons behind me. How exciting it would be to travel by way of horse and buggy on those bumpy dirt roads. I yearned to have Diana as my bosom friend and a secret admirer named Gilbert. With each turn of the page, Avonlea was such a romantic place and I wanted to live there.

It was my childhood dream to one day visit Prince Edward Island (PEI). My dream came true that memorable summer of 1999. There truly was a sense of mystery and magic on that island.

This being my 100th post, you may be perplexed as to how these two things relate. Well...today marks the 100th anniversary of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic novel, Anne of Green Gables (1908-2008). It was 100 years ago that Anne, with an e, was brought to life for generations after generations to come to know and enjoy. There is no better way for me to celebrate my 100th post than to giveaway one of my most cherished childhood stories, Anne of Green Gables.

My hopes for this giveaway is to bring the magic of this story into the hearts and lives of your children and family. This is beginning to sound like a Disney advertisement. Don't be quick to think that this traditional tale is a girls-only book, for the themes run deep: love, family, friendship, and honor. These characteristics are appropriate for all genders.

This is a giveaway for one book, Anne of Green Gables. If you wish to participate in this giveaway, leave me a comment with a brief recollection of your favorite part of the story (if you've read it). Deadline to enter is this Saturday at 8:00 P.M. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. (I've always wanted to say that). The drawing will be via random selection and the winner will be posted on Monday, July 28th. If your name is drawn, I will contact you.

If you are the winner of this giveaway, please promise to read this story with your child/children (if you have any). Reading books together, as a family, forms a special unity and creates wonderful childhood memories. Everyone should discover this classic story through the pages of the book.

Congratulations Natalie! Your posts are always a blessing to me. What a lovely way to celebrate your 100th! Believe it or not, I have never read Anne of Green Gables. Since my son is now grown, I do promise (should I win) to read it to my nieces. (They are 8 and 10.)

Blessings,
Tracy

Congratulations on your 100th post. You had me hooked to every word and thinking back to this lovely series of books and yes, even the TV series. Anne of Green Gables is one of my all-time favorites and how can I pick one favorite part? There are simply too many, but maybe the part when she first arrives, because that was for me the point of no return. I was captivated! It's always fun to win so I hope I do, but we will read this to our SON even if we have to get a library copy. I read The Secret Garden to him before he could even read on his own and it was his favorite book for several years. We read out loud together almost every night, and Anne is surely a character to know well.

Thank you for this lovely post. I wonder if there is a Anne of Green Gables dessert recipe floating around on the Internet. It would give me the excuse to blog about this lovely book on my desserts blog.

Don't need to enter me because my daughter already has the book, but I just had to comment. I loved the whole series! Such sweet books. Thanks for making me smile.

I loved how Marilla was so prickly but deep down she loved Anne something fierce!!

And Anne's green hair escapade. And her friendship with Diana. And Gilbert. And, and, and. . . .

My daughter is reading Anne now....what a wonderful story...we own it, so share with someone who doesn't...it's a real gift!

I agree....reading with our children is one of the greatest gifts we give them!!

Peace!

oh, and I use photoshop and a free program...Paint.net...very easy to navigate...the gal who did my blog directed me to it...you can download it for free...it takes awhile to "play around" but it sure is fun!!!

try it!!
I'll be happy to help you out if you need it!:)

OH.... how I love those books! I actually found one at the library in the junior fiction section called "Before Green Gables" telling the story of Anne's life (lots of liberties taken from the few details given in the LMM books, I am sure) and it was so good!
I would love to go to PEI sometime too!
I don't know that I have a favorite part, although the cherry cordial affair is pretty funny! But I hope that as my girls grow (they are 4.5 and 18 months now) that they will love "Anne with an 'e'" as much as I have!
So, if I win, I will definitely be reading to my girls!

Thank you for your comment on my daughter's (1st grade blog). I thought it would be a great record of the year and it is teaching her computer skills. She took the pictures, cropped them and uploaded herself.

Anyway, congratulations on your 100th post. I have not read Anne of Green Gables but I took some quiz and aftering answering some questions it said I was that book, so I'd like to read it and find out why. My daughter will probably enjoy it too.

Come back and visit us, we have some exciting things planned this year.

You are a girl after my own heart! I have the books and the dvds and I so want to visit Prince Edward Island someday. (Please don't enter me in the contest since I already have my own). I just wanted to stop by and say hello. Happy 100th post!

Here from Sheila's blog...

"And people laugh at me because I use big words. But if you have big ideas you have to use big words to express them, haven't you?"

and

"There's such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn't be half so interesting."

and you'll appreciate this one,

"Mrs. Lynde says that sound doctrine in the man and good housekeeping in the woman make an ideal combination for a minister's family."

Blessing to you,

Congratulations on your 100th post. That's quite an accomplishment!
Ann of Green Gables - In all the reading I have done over the years, I don't think I've ever read that book. Imagine that!
It looks like it would be one I'd enjoy, though.
Blessings.

Congrats on 100 posts! I loved how you made it a contest too.

I figured I was the only one who hadn't read the book. I have seen the movies though and loved it.

Hope I am not to late. I have never read this book but my daughter and me love to read. Congrats on your 100 post. We just returned from Montgomery. J is still on the road (in the church van). They got stuck in some traffic. She was really a trooper this year. She organized everything and it went very smooth. She is surely a God send! Have a nice weekend!

My daughter and I love Anne of Green Gables too! The whole series as well. We cry every time when Anne finally tells Gilbert how she feels about him. We're hopeless romantics!
I too am married to the Preacher. We've been in ministry for 34 years. It's been quite interesting to say the least! Any time you need to talk I'm a good listener.
God Bless,
Michele (Marsha's sister)
